In this session, we'll unpack the challenges and fears around stick play, and also the benefits and joy that children can experience when we embrace this natural loose part. Whether you are trying to step out of your own comfort zone or want to advocate for this type of play to colleagues or families, you will be inspired by this session.

Why do children ask so many questions? (and should we answer them?)

It's true - children ask a LOT of questions. From the moment that they can talk, many children seem to have an endless stream of wondering, and as educators we are often in the place and time where these wonderings become questions. But what do we do with all of these questions? Should we answer them? And if so, how? In this session there will be lots of questions - lots to reflect on, and lots to wonder about. We'll talk about why children have so many questions, and how to respond to children's questions in a way that sparks curiosity and imagination.

Trusting Children with Real Things

If we want children to learn real skills, we need to trust them with real things. How can you understand what happens to glass if it is dropped, if you have never held a glass? Sure, it can be scary to hand a child a glass for the first time, but it's not just a matter of handing it over and walking away. When we trust children with real things, we also have a responsibility - a responsibility to show the child how to use that real thing, how to care for it, to explain the potential risks involved. That's what we'll be exploring in this session: the practicalities of trusting children with real things.

Children's bodies need to move. They need to move in ways that they feel the urge - to spin, to roll, to climb, to jump, to hop, to skip, to kick, to stomp So how do we create space for that big body movement? How do we ensure that children have not only the physical environment and resources in which to engage in big body play, but the supportive interactions of adults within that space, and the time in which to play freely? This session will answer those questions and more!

In this session, we will reflect on the interactions that we have with families at the beginning and the end of the day, how to talk about hard things, and how to share a child's experience and play in a way that is heartfelt and meaningful.

The Art of Really Seeing

Slow down. What do you see? There's delight and wonder to be found in the world around us, and it can be used in different ways within our work with children. In this session we will explore how we can not only learn from children to "really see", but we can also model it to children. We'll talk about the conversations, connections and learning that occurs when we slow down. We'll also consider this concept of really seeing from another perspective - our documentation of children's play, discoveries and learning.

Play My Way: Navigating Power Struggles in Play

Each and every day there are power struggles in children's play. It might be the child who always changes the rules, or the two children who are both determined to be Batman. Power struggles can feel unpleasant, and yet there are lessons to be learned when we embrace them. In this session we'll talk about how we can understand and embrace power struggles in play, what children are gaining as they navigate them, and how we know when to step in.

Mark making is indeed pretty magical. The realisation that the mark that you created with water, paint, pencils, crayons or any number of materials, means something, is a big thing. So, how do we support children in their mark making? What materials, environments and provocations should we provide? This session will look at the practicalities of supporting children's mark making.

Sustainable Sensory Play

Sensory play is a common inclusion in most early childhood programs. From buckets of goop and water troughs to shaving foam on easels, there are many creative ideas for supporting hands' on, sensorial experiences. But what are the sustainability implications of this type of play? How do the choices we make about these materials and how and where they are used, impact on the planet? In this session we will discuss the challenges around being more sustainable while embracing messy, sensorial play. We'll share practical ideas for supporting children to explore with all of their senses in ways that are sustainable, healthy, ethical and cost-effective.

Rest Time, or Restoration Time

Juggling the individual sleep and rest needs of children can be tricky. There are children who need to sleep, and children who don't. Often we have a "rest time" - where children are expected to sleep, or at the very least, lay down and be quiet, enabling other children to drift off to sleep. But is this really the best we can do? What if we rethought rest time, and thought about it as "restoration time"? A time to give our bodies what they need (which may be different for different children). In this session, we will explore the challenges of "rest time" and practical strategies for communicating with families, and supporting all children to get what they need.
