Talking and Thinking Floorbooks™

By involving both the children and educators in the Floorbook, we create a dynamic record of the children's learning journey. It serves as a tool for reflection, celebration, and ongoing assessment, enabling us to continually enhance our program to meet the needs and interests of the children in our care.

The course will include the motivational strategies developed by Dr Claire Warden to promote effective communication and the recording of this through a variety of holistic approaches including the use of Talking and Thinking Floorbooks™ which are being acknowledged as effective recording and evidencing tools for young children’s learning and experiences.

Why is the Talking and Thinking Floorbooks Approach™ so well-loved by Early Childhood Educators?

This form of documentation, developed by Dr Claire Warden, is taking Australia by storm!

Since its inclusion in the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0, the Talking and Thinking Floorbooks Approach is being widely explored throughout the sector.

The Floorbook is not just about photographs; it is also a space for the children's voices and reflections. It allows children to actively participate in documenting their own learning and provides educators with insights into their interests and developmental needs. The floorbook also serves as a communication tool between children, educators, and families, promoting collaboration and connection.

The biggest problem that the Floorbooks Approach solves it that it brings all of your documentation into one space. This approach to consulting with children, families and educators to inform your service's ongoing planning and reflection can simplify your programming and make it a more meaningful and collaborative experience.

With your team trained in Floorbooks, you'll be better equipped to:
  • Identify areas for improvement in your Quality Improvement Plan,
  • Support educators in meeting and exceeding National Quality Standards,
  • Demonstrate innovative practices during assessment and rating visits,
  • Showcase your centre's commitment to child-centered learning.

Today's session was fantastic, it was both informative and practical. I have never had the confidence to implement a floorbook, but after today I am really to give it a go. Thank you!

Amazing session! I have read Claire Warden's book on the Floorbook Approach but still couldn't quite wrap my head around it all. Having it all broken down in person and being able to personalise it to our setting was great. Having chance to create our own examples was so valuable as I feel confident to start putting the learning from tonights session into practice. I am so excited to play around with it and see it in action.

100% satisfaction! Absolutely loved this! Loved Tash and her entire delivery of the training. She was amazing! Made it so easy to understand and be able to put into practice immediately! Thank you so much!

What is the Floorbooks Approach?

And how does this planning approach support quality improvement?

A Floorbook acts as a central hub for the process of documentation, critical reflections and forward planning in a service. It is a large book that is filled with images and words that show the playful inquiries, theories and plans and have been collated by children and adults.

The Floorbook includes children’s narratives, observations, samples of children’s work or traces of play, and the reflections of adults and children as they share multiple perspectives.
